Lititz Moravian Senior Choir Resumes after a Summer Recess
Members of the Lititz Moravian Senior Choir will resume regular rehearsals and participation in worship services in September after a summer recess. The Senior Choir directed by Philip T. D. Cooper meets on Wednesday evenings at 7:30 p.m. at the church. Their first rehearsal is scheduled for September 8 to prepare for the outdoor worship scheduled for Sunday September 12.
Cooper, Director of Music Ministry at the Church, says this is a good time to join the choir, which is probably the oldest choral group in town. He invites interested persons to contact him by e-mail at philtdc@comcast.net, or call the church office at 626-8515. Choir members do not have to be members of the Church.
“Singing in the choir is a great way to make new friends!” says choir member Doodie Charles. “We have a wonderful fellowship and find great joy in serving the Lord through singing.”
The Senior Choir provides anthems and leads congregational singing at the 10:30 a.m. Sunday worship service throughout the year. The 30-member choir is an all-volunteer group. The choir’s repertoire includes a wide selection of church music including 18th Century Moravian hymnody, classical compositions by the masters, some folk hymns and contemporary praise tunes. Last year’s repertoire can be found at the Church’s website www.lititzmoravian.org at the music section.
The Senior Choir carries major responsibility for the Christmas Vigils that are formed on the Singstunde model, a Moravian tradition of carefully combining text and music. More than 4,000 worshipers attend the six successive services and the Family Lovefeast. The Choir provides the same kind of support for the other Lovefeasts held throughout the year.
Lititz Moravian has always been a very musical organization. Many Moravian hymns were composed in Lititz and the Church’s Museum houses an extensive collection of 18th-century musical instruments. The Church also maintains two Tannenberg organs, one built in Lititz for the new sanctuary in 1787, and the other for another church in 1790.
The Congregation also maintains its famous Trombone Choir (a brass ensemble) that performs for many services during the year. There is also a five-octave handbell choir and a praise band called “Glory be Good” that will be playing for the outdoor service on September 12. These groups also welcome new participants.
