The Mission Gift Shop

The Moravian Mission Gift Shop was inspired by visiting Moravian Missionary Rick Nelson in 1992. Rick was "home" on leave from his mission post in Honduras and brought new enthusiasm for mission into our congregation. The shop was created to earn money for mission projects locally, nationally, and internationally. The shop, entirely run by volunteers, originally sold items made in the mission field. However, what the shop volunteers heard most often from visitors were, "Where can we buy those beautiful stars" or "So, what is a Moravian anyway?" The group then began to branch out to providing items that were of a more unique nature such as Moravian Stars of all types, the traditional beeswax candles, and books of local and historical interest. The array of items sold in the shop has changed over the years. The shop has earned over $100,000 to send to a variety of mission projects.

The bright and cheery shop shines with the reflected light of a variety of multicolored glass stars. Interesting unique artwork, note cards, and scherrenschnitte (German scissor cutting) are also available.

Moravian Cookies are also something to be tried! How can something so thin have so much flavor? Also, there are traditional German paper stars of all sizes as well as supplies and instructions to make your own! A variety of Moravian Star inspired Christmas lights and decorations attract attention.

Unique items for the home also can be found: tea towels with the Moravian Motto "In Essentials Unity; In Non-essentials Liberty, In all things Love;" or coffee mugs with the Moravian Seal, a lamb surrounded with the words "Our Lamb Has Conquered, Let Us Follow Him", napkins, placemats, tablecloths, and especially the traditionally wonderful smelling handmade beeswax candles!

Lighted Moravian Stars are the best sellers. There are so many sizes, shapes and even colors available. The original stars called "Herrenhutter Stars" were red and white to signify both the blood and purity of Christ. Now, the white star is most widely recognized. The stars are made in America and the prices are hard to beat!

The all volunteer staff is most delighted to answer questions about the background of the Moravian Church, the customs and traditions as well as providing a welcoming place to browse and shop. Beautifully crafted jewelry is also available.
